Stars return to the friendly confines of home
The Buffalo Stars Empire Junior B team returned to the friendly confines of Holiday Rinks last evening in a match up against thruway rival Maksymum from Rochester.
Maksymum was looking to extend their 2 game winning streak and increase their standings lead over Buffalo. The Stars, who have not been home since the Opening 911 weekend were coming off a streak winning only once in their last 7 games.
A crowd of over 600 people were on hand for this Western New York matchup and they got their money's worth.
The Stars came flying out of the gate and quickly got on the scoreboard just 2 minutes and 37 seconds in as Brandon Renckens found the net and the Stars were up by one. Less than 2 minutes later Andy Sturtz cranked one in to put Buffalo up by a pair. The Stars struck again on the power play at the 10 minute mark as veteran Chris Kinney roofed one and the Stars were in command. Maksymum came back with a goal of their own 3 minutes later and the period ended with the Stars up 3-1.
Maksymum cut the Buffalo lead to one at 16:41 of the second but Buffalo came back on the power play as Sturtz notched his second of the game to put Buffalo back into the 2 goal lead. The Stars went up by 4 as Matt Shumate scored at 5:24 and again at 2:14 and the Stars left the ice with a solid 6-2 lead.
A very physical third period ensued but Buffalo struck first once again as Matt Shumate completed the natural hat trick to put the Stars up by 5. A couple of later period goals by Maksymum was too little, too late and the Stars skated off with a well earned and much needed 7-4 win.
Buffalo improves to 5-5-1 in league play and is 8-5-1-1 overall. The Stars continue their home stand this weekend as they take on cross state rivals Brewster Bulldogs this Saturday and Sunday at Holiday. The Stars CHA team is also home this weekend facing off against Springfield. This weekend is the Buffalo Stars Health & Fitness Expo and will feature a blood drive in conjunction with the Upstate New York Transplant Services and Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
