Stars Continental teams set for Playoffs

2010-03-09

It is the Buffalo Stars Continental B and C teams turn for playoffs this weekend as they travel to Warwick, PA for the playoffs which will determine who qualifies for the Junior Nationals.

The first year Buffalo Stars CHA Junior B team, finishing the regular season with an impressive 21-12-3 record and good for 6th place overall will face off against the Mass Maple Leafs in the first game of the double elimination series. In the previous two meetings this season between these teams, the Stars skated to a 2 all tie and a horrific 12-3 loss.  Buffalo has improved considerably since that day back in September and looks to challenge the Leafs.

The Stars road to the Nationals will be formidable. The CHA only has 2 secured spots to Nationals and the Metro Moose as Regular Season Champion has secured the first seed.  The winner or runner up of the playoffs will take the second seed. The CHA has an opportunity for a 3rd seed if they win in a play-in game against the Empire Junior B league 6th seed. The Stars will pretty much have to win-out this weekend to have their shot at Nationals.

The Buffalo Stars CHA C team route is less tedious but still formidable.  After spending the first half of the season in the basement, the Stars C team came on after Christmas and lost only one game in their final 2 months of the regular season. Their regular season record of 11-12-4 was good enough for 3rd place in the 6 team division.  The CHA only has 2 entries at the Junior C Nationals and Suffolk PAL has secured the first seed as the regular season champions.  The Stars C team will also have to win-out this coming weekend in order to have their shot at Nationals. First up for the Stars is the Frederick Freeze.  The Stars and Freeze met 8 times this season, including non league games with the Freeze having the edge 5-2-1.

In an oddity of Junior hockey, the Buffalo Stars Empire and CHA B teams could find themselves playing each other in the play-in game. The Empire team will not know their rank of 5th or 6th until after this coming weekend at the Empire Final 4. If the Stars end up taking the 6th position, they would find themselves hosting the CHA 3rd seed. The Buffalo Stars CHA B team could be the 3rd seed after this weekend. I guess we have to wait and see.
